with normforme governor romney's. >> good afternoon to you, alex. this is a town hall debate, so both are tailoring to that. mitt romney is sparring with ohio senator rob partman. i'm told he's already engaged in several telephone town halls. he's had several time to prep leading up to today. those who know mitt romney say this really plays to his strength. romney's challenge is going to be match the performance he delivered in the first debate. and that gets us to president obama. he has to sharpen his performance after the first debate that many described as lack laster. the aides say they're going to adjust his strategy. they're here working on that. they will only say that president obama is again spars with senator john kerry and reading through a lot of materials to get ready for the debate. reporters who are at president obama's hotel where he's prep e preparing right now have already seen a number of advisers walking around with thick binders. so clearly preparations and practice has begun for the day. but president obama's spothers say in order to win the debate has to deliv

maintain the romney momentum? >> this is a classic case where both sides of the aisle people saw what they wanted to see. >> joining me now is brad woodhouse, communications director of the democrat national committee. thanks for joining us today. >> thanks, richard. >> the vice president is being hammered by people who say he was laughing inappropriately, very energetic certainly. smirking, interrupting frequently. let's play some of those moments for our viewers, first. >> under a romney administration, we will have credibility on this issue. >> vice president biden? >> it's incredible. >> thank heaven which have these sanctions in place. >> oh, god. >> it's been discredited by six other studies. over 100 criminal investigations. >> martha. >> go ahead. >> martha, look. >> here is some of what the republicans are saying about the vice president's performance last night. >> reminded me of al gore in 2000 walking over and standing by president bush sort of getting in his space. >> i don't know if he thought this was a joke but he was laughing a lot. >> it was bizarre. i thought it was

. >> i mean governor romney, this is his fourth day in a row in ohio. i think both campaigns have been pretty clear how important the buckeye state is. i'll ask is there a path to 270 for you guys without ohio? >> look. i don't think they've written ohio out or excuse me off. it's still their path to 270. that's why they're there. because there's excitement on the ground there. you're seeing vol -- >> can you win the presidency without ohio? >> yes. i believe so. i've not done the private polling. look what they're doing. they wouldn't be there if this wasn't a winnable state for them. one of the things you should look at, take a look at maine. there's a chance you're seeing an erosion of support for obama in a very blue state where one of them is actually pulling higher than ohio. this happened in '08 with nebraska. >> before i let you out of here, we saw them talking about abortion and he knew of no abortion legislation that would be part of his plan and ryan said he wouldn oppose it except in the cases of rape and incest and life or death of a mother. >> as a woman, i saw no dayligh

of weeks. and we can also tell you that both paul ryan and mitt romney were on the record yesterday about this situation down in libya, and what vice president joe biden said in thursday night's debate. the republicans believe they caught him contradicting the state department. listen to what these two republicans had to say on the trail yesterday. >> the vice president directly contradicted the sworn testimony of state department officials. he's doubling down on denial. >> this is not what leadership looks like. we need clarity, not confusion. we need accountability, and no more excuses. >>> now ohio may ultimately be the state that turns this election one way or another. as we mentioned earlier the president still holding a lead here. obviously the auto bailout a big factor alex. about one in eight jobs are related to the auto industry. the president approved that bailout of general motors and chrysler. governor romney favored a managed bankruptcy. we'll have to see if he can make up the ground with 23 days to go. as you mentioned crisscross the state today. paul ryan will head up to mi

continues. biden is in wisconsin and mitt romney is virginia before heading to ohio to meet up with paul ryan. let's get the reactions from both sides. cheering vice president biden, the happy warrior after his aggressive performance one that republicans are describing as condescending and disrespectful. look how the new york post put it. the contrast wasn't just between biden and ryan but between biden and president obama. the cover, vote for joe, vp shows obama how to debate. inside, smirky biden upstages his boss. with me, former ohio governor and former democratic ted strickland. did he show up the boss? >> no, but he showed up paul ryan and that's what i think is was important. he showed a lot of heart. joe biden in my judgment is not only a good public servant and good political leader but he's a good human being. he cares deeply about this country and the people who have been left behind, the struggling middle class. that came across last night. >> i had a democratic say to me if you want the passion, you're going to get stuff that you don't like. it was some of the smirks and sor

of romney in iowa and ohio in particular. they've got to rest one, probably both of those states away from barack obama. >> for all the swing states and those of you don't wake up with a map staring at you like chuck todd and myself, this is assuming mitt romney wins, florida, north carolina, virginia, colorado and nevada. a lot of swing states. he has to win two out of three out of ohio, wisconsin, iowa. i don't think he's going to win wisconsin. >> he has to win one of them. if he swept all those others he just had to win one. >> romney would? >> yes. >> if romney wins ohio, he's still -- >> he gets there. or he win iowa. he just has to win one of these midwestern states. >> which one is the best target for him? >> i think it's -- organizationally, i would say it's ohio. i don't know. i think both ohio and iowa are hard. >> mike i agree with you. i'm thinking iowa. >> i think there are huge organizational holes that romney dug for himself in both of those states. >> chuck, it's donny. you talked a lot and i found this fascinating about kind of enthusiasm gap as far as that energizing. i

romney specifically embrace simpson-bowles or does he not? he gave us both answers in the last debate. what is your understanding of the governor's approach, he's a presidential candidate, to simpson-bowles? yes or no. >> the governor's approach to simpson-bowles it's a step in the right direction, right. >> but he has his own plan and his own plan would, you know, does not involve some of the components of simpson bowls. as it relates to that, you know, on that issue, he's been pretty clear. he's got his own plan -- >> he hasn't been clear. >> okay. time-out. mitt romney did one thing that everybody acknowledges, even though in his own party, which is pivot further towards the center. paul ryan's budget has been declared by some folks, some analysts, including those in the republican party, to be a fairly strong document win that takes specific stances on the american social compact. do you think paul ryan will be defending mitt romney's moderate position tonight or mitt romney's previously severely conservative position of the campaign trail? >> he'll be presenting people with a har

that. looks like governor romney who performed beautifully in that debate is -- has seen a surge as a result. i mean, we are, you know, these things ebb and flow and pushing up against another big night for both campaigns. i think that vice president biden will do well. i think that paul ryan will do well also. but i think that the issue here is you have to remember whether for mitt romney's own gaffes or whether the media built up president obama's some figure who is going to do extremely well in this campaign and wipe the floor with mitt romney, it already set the bar so high for president obama he fell very flat. didn't come close to the bar. we have an issue paul ryan is thought to be this wonky nerd and when he comes out, if he can perform even half as well as mitt romney, they are overestimated or underestimating congressman ryan, i would say if they think he will come out and just throw out a bunch of numbers and stats and not put any hard or skin in the game so to speak. he has won a congressional district because he can relate to people. i think we are going to see some
